OPA’s Beach Cleanup Station Brought in Record Numbers of Volunteers

Ocean Park Association participated in a big way, and Santa Monica, California's beaches are better for it.

California Coastal Cleanup Day is the premier volunteer event focused on the marine environment in the country. This year, more than 70,000 volunteers worked together to collect more than 900,000 pounds of trash and recyclables from our beaches, lakes, and waterways. California Coastal Cleanup Day has been hailed by the Guinness Book of World Records as "the largest garbage collection" (1993). Since the program started in 1985, over 800,000 Californians have removed more than 12 million pounds of debris from our state's shorelines and coast.

OPA has been sponsoring and hosting Heal The Bay’s volunteer check-in station in Ocean Park (on the sand at Lifeguard Station #27) for the past 4 years. This year, the community came out in record numbers. Over 285 volunteers checked-in at the Ocean Park station, which ranked it the 8th busiest of over 70 Heal The Bay stations throughout Los Angeles County. We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day, weather wise. And everyone was in great spirits, eager and willing to pitch in and make a difference. In a matter of 3 hours, OPA’s station collected more than 175 pounds of trash and recyclables from the shoreline, aiding to reduce the amount of waste that makes its way into the Pacific Ocean. This year, I took on the task of organizing and running the station. In past years, my esteemed colleague, Mary Hubbell has done an amazing job, so I had big shoes to fill. Without the help of my friends, fellow OPA Board Members and Keller Williams Associates and Ocean Park residents, I could not have pulled off such a successful event.
